A golf coach was telling his team that life will sometimes have traps or will seem difficult to navigate, so to always focus on the flag.
I don’t know much about golf other than I’m not patient enough to watch it on TV, but I really like that analogy the golf coach gave. His name was J.B. Peña.
Last week I saw the movie called The Long Game, which is about Coach Peña and five Mexican American teens who he led to not only defy the odds to form a high school golf team, but to win the High School State Championship in Del Rio Texas in the 1950’s.
Coach Peña cared for youth, wanting the best for them.
As he spent time coaching them, they grew a strong relationship.
At one point, one of the boys lost his temper and did something wrong.
Coach Peña sacrificed himself, taking the consequences so the boy's future would not be hurt.
Love. That’s what love for another looks like.
That boy didn’t do anything to earn Coach Peña’s love. He gave it freely to his golf team, sacrificing himself many times.
In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins. 1 John 4:10
It gives me understanding of the enormity of God’s love for each of us when I see love like this.
You and I don’t have to do anything to earn God’s love.
As this verse from this coming Sunday’s Gospel reading says, He simply loves us, so much so that He sent His Son to us, who then gave His life for us.
Love. Sacrifice out of love.
This enormous love for you and me is what we are celebrating this Easter Season, which continues for two more weeks.
Continued Easter blessings of Love!
